Automobile Ice Racing is just that – racing
cars on ice. There are two clubs in British Columbia that organize
Ice Racing.
Organized by the Western Canadian Ice Racing
Association of BC (aka Cars On Ice) and sanctioned by the Confederation
of Auto Sport Car Clubs, Ice Racing has been operating in the
Cache Creek/Ashcroft area of British Columbia for over thirty
five years. Racing takes place on Barnes Lake located just outside
of Ashcroft where a race track of approximately 1.0 km is plowed
as soon as the ice is thick enough and the snow starts to fall.
Organized by the Knox Mountain Motor Sports
Club and also sanctioned by the Confederation of Auto Sport
Car Clubs, there has been Ice Racing in the Okanagan region
of BC off and on for approximately 15 years. Racing in the Okanagan
takes place on either Duck Lake just outside of Kelowna or Swan
Lake in Vernon.
Races take place during the months of January
and February and attracts entrants from all over the province
of BC and even some from Washington state. Cars raced can be
anything from 40 year old Austin Mini’s and Datsun 510’s to
the modern Hondas, Nissans, Chevettes and Volkswagens.
The tires these cars use to race on the slippery surface of
the ice can be studded or just regular snow tires. Regular snow
tires sometimes used are Bridgestone Blizzaks, Nokian Hakkapeliitta
or Michelin Alpine.
