Date CreatedSeptember 30, 2026
Name of ProponentGreg Petroski
Short DescriptionClarifying tire requirements for MAX in hill climb
Applicable Regulatory DocumentTime Attack
Type of Rule ChangeModification
Affected Section18.7.2.7.1
Current Regulation

For Hill Climb events, Max class cars which have safety equipment that
meets the CACC GCR Roll Cage Specifications will be allowed to run DOT
tires from 199TW to 40TW

Proposed Regulation

For Hill Climb events, Cars that are in an applicable class which have safety equipment that
meets the CACC GCR Roll Cage Specifications will be allowed to run tires conforming to the following rules:

1. Minimum UTQG Treadwear Grade of 40.

2. US Department of Transportation (DOT) approval.

All other requirements listed in the SCCA Time Trials MAX CATEGORY: 1.3.2.2 do not apply. Other rules and requirements in the category still apply.

Reason for Rule Change

Max class has significantly more rules than just DOT and 200tw minimum. All of the sub 200tw tires that are intended to be used do not meet the requirements as they are written. Specifically listed are a minimum tread depth of 7/32" and "for highway use". Typical tires that are sub 200tw are almost always lower tread depth than that and in the case of tires like the hoosier R8 and A8 specifically list on the sidewall "not for highway use".
